12% of UK households are mixed race.
These are our stories.
Tangled Roots enables mixed race families and people explore their life experiences and discuss our place in the broader culture.
There are very few books, films or radio shows about mixed people, so we create 'space' for mixture. We publish books about mixed people, run live performance events, hold writing workshops and generally draw public attention to the mixed experience.
Here, you can view our unique picture-history of UK race mixing, and see the mixed families history has forgotten. Or, you could buy the Tangled Roots book, and find out more about the many authors in it. If you like, you could use our writing workshops to start writing about YOUR experiences, and we'll publish it!
Of course, a space can be a physical one, and Tangled Roots events are created to be welcoming to all shades, races and ethnicities. Please send us your email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you’d like to hear more about our spell-binding live performances.
You might have already attended our photographic exhibition featuring portraits of mixed writers, or even met us in Chicago at 2014’s Critical Mixed Race Studies conference where we performed and talked about UK mixture. We are working on more opportunities like this. Watch this space.
Most of all, Tangled Roots is a work in progress, because ‘mixed’ is the fastest growing ethnic group in the country, and we don’t yet know what the future holds for us.
But we do know that, today, 12% of UK families are mixed and so far, few people are telling our stories. Tangled Roots exists to fill this gap.
